Armenian parliament approves in first reading privatization of national postal operator
YEREVAN, June 19. / ARKA /. Armenia's National Assembly has approved today in the first reading a decision on the inclusion of the national postal operator HayPost in the list of state-owned properties subject to privatization.
Arman Sahakyan, the head of the State Property Management Department, said the privatization of the company will attract fresh investments which are necessary to finance HayPost's development, introduction of new technology and renovation of its infrastructure.
"New investment will create a postal operator that will have a strong presence in all the regions of the country to deliver high-quality postal, financial and retail services to the population through the use of modern technology", said Sahakyan.
The new owner will have to upgrade the company’s infrastructure, renovate 250 post offices across the country, buy new post cars, to install 750 thousand mailboxes, to build the automated mail sorting center in Yerevan, to establish branches in the Diaspora and to organize international sales of Armenian post stamps.
HayPost is the official national postal operator of the Republic of Armenia which provides postal, payment and retail services. HayPost currently operates through 900 of its postal offices across Armenia, from urban to the most remote rural regions.
On November 30, 2006, the Dutch HayPost Trust Management B.V. was given the responsibility to operate HayPost. The purpose of the Trust Management is to make HayPost increasingly commercial, transparent, efficient and accountable for its customers in Armenia and abroad, according to a statement on HayPost's official website.
The only shareholder of the company is the ministry of transport and communications. On January 1, 2015 the company had about 3,000 employees. HayPost's charter capital is worth 521 million Armenian drams. . ($1 – 473.96 drams). -0-
