ArmenTel helps Matenadaran digitize ancient manuscripts
YEREVAN, May 25. / ARKA /. ArmenTel telecommunications company (trading as Beeline) will provide assistance to Matenadaran Institute of Ancient Manuscripts in Yerevan to digitize ancient documents and manuscripts kept at the depository, as well as restore damaged manuscripts and printed books.
According to ArmenTel news release, the digitized manuscripts and documents will be posted on the official website of Matenadaran and on its internal network ‘to expand dissemination of scientific information and allow scientists to use it freely, no matter where they are.’
ArmenTel CEO Andrei Pyatakhin is quoted as saying in the news release that ‘it is impossible to imagine a modern system of written heritage preservation today without the use of digital technologies and the creation of electronic resources.’
"The role and significance of Matenadaran in the development of scientific thought and preservation and transmission of historical heritage to the younger generation is hard to overestimate. Thanks to this project Beeline will help make these important documents and manuscripts available to anyone anywhere in the world," he said.
According to Ara Khzmalyan from Matenadaran, the main function of the depository is preservation and restoration of manuscripts, valuable documents, ancient books and their popularization.
Khzmalyan added that they will use Japanese restorative materials, which are considered the best in the world, to restore a large number of ancient manuscripts and documents.
"We hope that our cooperation in this sphere will be long and would like to thank our new sponsors,’ he added.
ArmenTel also is helping Matenadaran restore hundreds of damaged copies of written books and manuscripts. Dozens of such manuscripts have been digitized already and made available on Matenadaran’s intranet.
