About 40% of Armenian companies were phished, according to anti-phishing working group

YEREVAN, November 14. /ARКА/. About 40% of Armenian companies were phished, according to the latest report of the Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG) of ESET internet security company.
ESET specialists interviewed dozens of IT directors, system administrators and business owners to find out the state of information security in Armenia.

The overall study involved 242 respondents from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Belarus. The survey was conducted in August 2019.

According to the survey, 90% of companies faced external cyber threats and 58% internal cyber threats.
Most often, Armenian companies suffer from such cyber threats as spam and malware (65% and 61%  respectively). The findings of the survey also showed that 39% of Armenian companies experienced phishing.

The report says the number of attacks targeting employees with access to company finances has now increased. Such attacks are called BEC (business e-mail compromise) ,which can bring the attackers billions of dollars.

Among internal cyber threats, software vulnerabilities are the leading (32%). In addition, the businesses of Armenia regularly encounter intentional (10%) or accidental (19%) leaks of information. According to the survey, 74% consider financial information to be the most important, which can be either an object of a phishing attack or data leakage, which potentially poses a threat to the stability of the company.
The study found that 61% of respondents are worried about vulnerability of information about their partners and customers; 48% worry about the personal data of their employees.

"This may be due to serious changes in legislation and increased responsibility for violation of the procedure for working with personal data (87% of respondents said that they are closely following legal news)," the study said.

ESET experts have studied what measures the companies involved in the study take to protect the listed data from cyber threats. The most popular are anti-virus solutions (97% of respondents use them). Some 68% of companies closely monitor software updates, as well as monitor external devices.

"Businesses in Armenia pay serious attention to protection against data leaks. Some 32% of respondents said that they use DLP technology, which allows closing the main channels of leaks, preventing losses and even making a forecast of potentially dangerous actions of employees," the study said.

At the same time, ESET experts recommend that comprehensive anti-virus solutions and modern DLP technologies be used, which, together with the competent organization of an information security system, provide maximum protection against external and internal cyber threats. -0-
