As many cybercrimes recorded in first half of 2020 as in 2019
YEREVAN, July 10. /ARКА/. In the first half of 2020, almost as many cybercrimes were recorded in Armenia as in 2019, Sasun Grigoryan, a senior investigator of the Investigative Committee in charge of combating hi-tech and cybercrimes, told a news conference today.
He said in 2019, the Investigative Committee had initiated 118 criminal cases involving cybercrimes, of which 64 were related to computer fraud. He added that in the first half of 2020, 94 such criminal cases were launched.
“This means that in the first half of this year, the Investigative Committee investigated as many crimes as in 2019 as a whole. Moreover, the number of frauds is almost the same as in 2019,” Grigoryan said.
He said that over the past years, the number of cybercrimes investigated has fluctuated around a hundred a year.
When asked what the growth was prompted by he said that cybercrimes are highly latent and in fact only 1% of them are becoming known.
“It’s inappropriate to say that there were fewer cybercrimes in 2019 than in 2020. It’s just that this year the number of reports by affected citizens to law enforcement agencies increased, which indicates an increase in their legal awareness and an increase in confidence in law enforcement agencies,” he said. -0-
