Attacks of ransomware Trojans against users in Armenia drop
YEREVAN, September 30. /ARKA/. In the second quarter of 2020, some 0.36% of computer users in Armenia faced attacks by ransomware Trojans, in Georgia the share of such users was 0.23%, and in Azerbaijan - 0.33%, according to a Kaspersky Lab study.
In the same period in 2019, Trojans-encryptors attacked 0.57% of users in Armenia, 0.37% in Georgia and 0.85% in Azerbaijan.
In the second quarter of 2020, ransomware Trojans attacked users the most in Bangladesh (1.69%), Mozambique (1.16%), and Uzbekistan (1.14%). In the second quarter of 2020, 4,406 new modifications of ransomware Trojans were detected worldwide, down from 16,017 new modifications detected in April-June 2019.
According to experts, almost all ransomware infections follow the same pattern. A user or any employee of the organization receives a letter with malicious software. The recipient, not recognizing the threats, launches malware that exploits vulnerabilities in operating systems or other software (often long-known vulnerabilities) and encrypts data. Sometimes (again through known vulnerabilities), it spreads to all computers on the organization's local network.
In order to avoid infection with ransomware Trojans, experts recommend timely updating of software and, first of all, operating systems, using security solutions on all computers that can cope with both known and not yet identified ransomware. Employees should also be trained to recognize and defend against social engineering techniques used by attackers.
Users who have fallen victim to ransomware attacks are advised not to pay the ransom for file decryption under any circumstances, as this does not guarantee the return of access to the files, but it will definitely encourage attackers to further spread the malware.
It is also necessary to report the incident to law enforcement agencies or contact the experts: perhaps a utility that allows decrypting files already exists, and security specialists can help restore access to documents. –0--
