Initiative to regulate internet connected with legislation, not cyber security - minister
YEREVAN, October 24. /ARKA/. The initiative to regulate internet is connected with legislation, not cyber security, Armenian High Technology Industry Minister Hakob Arshakyan said Wednesday at a Q&A session in the National Assembly.
"This issue is raised in the context of the legality and personal data protection," he said. "I want to say that laws clearly regulate these aspects, and no changes take place in terms of legality, but technical changes are proposed. They should be discussed, and after that we will come to conclusion."
The minister said the entire information goes through providers, it is also protected by the law, and the only issue is temporary archiving.
Arshakyan said that the growth of small operators' financial burden will be considered as well, since appropriate equipment is needed for keeping these data.
He also said that access to the data is possible only in the event of an appropriate court decision. In his words, a similar system is operating for telephone calls.
Earlier, Samvel Martirosyan, a cyber security expert, said referring to his sources that the Public Services Regulatory Commission is going to demand from internet providers to archive IP, IMEI, email and other users data for two years.
In response, the Public Services Regulatory Commission provided explanations, according to which such information is subject to opening only in the cases stipulated by the law.
Some nongovernmental organizations have criticized this initiatives as well. -0---
