YEREVAN, March 12. /ARKA/. The Internet penetration rate for Armenia’s households has risen fr om 29% to 75% over the last five years, said Aram Mkrtchyan, head of communication and brand development at Orange Armenia. Internet access has considerably expanded in villages wh ere Internet penetration rate exceeded 66% as of the end of 2014, compared to 14% in 2010. The expanding Internet access helps also develop the Armenian-language content, and Orange Armenia has had its contribution to it through wide mobile Internet coverage, Mkrtchyan said. Armenia has recently recorded a high rate of growth of Internet access devices, he said. In 2010 very few had smartphones, and, for instance, smartphone sales at Orange Armenia accounted for 3% only, as compared to 86% today, he said. Smartphones have become a mainstream today, he said. The market has changed substantially in terms of Internet penetration and technology, and now it is the time for development of the national content the society needs, Mkrtchyan said. In this respect, ArmNet Awards Armenian website and mobile apps contest may contribute to the development of the market. Five years ago, there were only websites competing in the contest, but now websites and mobile applications have equal opportunities to compete, Mkrtchyan said. –0--
