Phishers’ interest in Armenia subsides, Kaspersky Lab urges users to be cautious
YEREVAN, August 19. /ARKA/. In April-June 2020, 6.50% of users in Armenia were subjected to phishing attacks, while in Georgia this figure was 7.88%, and in Azerbaijan - 6.35%, according to the Kaspersky Lab representative office of in Armenia.
In Q2 2019, 8.73% of users faced phishing attacks in Armenia, 13.87% of users in Georgia, and 8.39% in Azerbaijan. This is evidenced by data from Kaspersky Lab, according to which phishers in the world most of all attacked users in Venezuela in April-June - 17.56%, while this figure at last year's "leader" Greece was 26.20%.
In April-June of this year, phishers were particularly active in using the COVID-19 pandemic topic. For example, the organizations responsible for the delivery of letters and parcels were in a hurry to notify recipients of possible delays and overlaps, and scammers began to fake these letters - the victim was asked to open the attachment in order to find out the address of the warehouse where it was possible to pick up the shipment that did not reach the destination. Bank phishing attacks were often carried out using letters in which various benefits and bonuses were offered to customers of credit institutions. The topic of compensation and assistance in connection with the pandemic was also actively used.
According to experts, cybercriminals specifically create phishing websites with "lucrative offers" in order to lure users there, who, without suspecting anything, provide these sites with their personal data (email logins and passwords, phone numbers) and even bank card details, which gives attackers a direct route to users' bank accounts. Therefore, users should not lose their vigilance, respond to suspicious offers and follow fake links in emails, social networks, instant messengers and websites, and then provide credentials to no one knows who. -0-
