Premier: internet used by about 67% of Armenia’s population
YEREVAN, December 15. /ARKA/. About 67% of Armenia's population use Internet, Armenian Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan said in his address to the participants of the presentation of 'Electronic Armenia' program that was read out by David Harutyunyan, head of the Armenian government’s administration, at the event. “Today we can place on record that about 67% of Armenia's population use Internet, and families' access to World-Wide Web reaches 82%,” Abrahamyan says in his address. “It is already possible to compare this indicator to the EU countries' figures, and it is one of the highest indicators in the region.” He said that access to Internet is the same all over the country's territory – provincial users and residents of the capital enjoy the same opportunities. In his address, the premier also reminded the participants of the event that the introduction of e-government system in 2010aimed at reducing citizens' contacts with officials and lessening corruption risks has produced visible results. He said that Armenia has improved its UN E-Government Readiness Index from 94 in 2012 to 61 in 2014. As another positive reform, the premier singled out the introduction of the electronic system of civil status registration and the electronic system of notification about fines for traffic rules violation. At the same time, the premier said that usage of e-systems is not widespread in the country – few poeple use them and there is still plenty to do in this direction. In his words, the Armenian government is constantly taking certain steps to develop e-society and highly appreciates the support provided by the European Union and other donors. According to the government, 34% of users in Armenia prefer mobile Internet and about for 15-20% usage of Internet is a leisure activity. The program costs €1.4 million. It is financed by the European Union. -0----
