Thirty-three cyber crimes committed in Armenia in eight months of 2014
YEREVAN, September 18. / ARKA /. Thirty-three cyber crimes were committed in Armenia in the first eight months of 2014, Tigran Petrosyan, head of a unit of the Main Directorate for Combating Organized Crime, said at a news conference today.
"Overall, some 103 cyber crimes have been committed in Armenia in 2013 and 2014. High technology was used to commit thefts, which make a significant portion of all such crimes,” he said.
He said other reported cyber crimes were creation of malicious software, dissemination of pornographic materials, including child pornography, interference with business correspondence, transfer of funds to fraudsters’ bank accounts.
He said frequent victims of such crimes are women who are being extorted money. This occurs most often in social networks.
He said a special division of police dealing with cyber crimes has partners in more than 60 countries.
According to him, Armenian specialists are constantly monitoring the websites in .am domain.
He said cyber crime rate has been on the rise since 2005, ‘because of soft penalties envisioned by the national Criminal Code, and the difficulties in the disclosure of such crimes.” He added that work is underway to reform the legislation governing this area. -0-
