U.S. Ambassador to Armenia posts tweets on polls
YEREVAN, May 7. /ARKA/. High turnout in the parliamentary elections of Armenia is a good sign for the country’s democracy, U.S. Ambassador to Armenia John Heffern posted on his Twitter page.
“High turnout in Armenian elections. Good sign for Armenia's democracy,” posted Heffern adding later, “Polls just closed. Everyone waiting for the results.”
As of the most recently updated data 1 million 572 thousand 518 constituents or 62,33% of the electorate voted in the polls.
Right political parties and one electoral bloc competed at the parliamentary elections on May 6, for 90 proportional seats in the National Assembly. Besides the three coalition parties - the Republican Party ofArmenia, Bargavach Hayastan (Prosperous Armenia) and Orinats Yerkir, there also the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF), Zharangutyun (Heritage), which has a combined list with Free Democrats, the Armenian National Congress (electoral bloc), the Democratic Party of Armenia, the Armenian Communist Party and the United Armenians party that were included in the ballots.
Total of 137 candidates competed for 41 majoritarian seats in the parliament, and the two precincts held uncontested elections.
In compliance with the Electoral Code of Armenia parties should gain at least 5% of votes and a bloc- 7% to receive seats in the parliament. --0--
