Armenia to have UCOM as fourth mobile operator
YEREVAN, November 4. / ARKA /. Armenia’s Public Service Regulatory Commission (PSRC ) has licensed today Ucom company for providing mobile services on 801-811 MHz and 842-852 MHz. radio frequencies.
Thus, Ucom will become the fourth mobile operator in Armenia. The license will come into force from November 2013 and will be valid until August 6, 2018.
Under the license, UCOM is to provide broadband Internet access in Yerevan and adjoining regions. Apart from that the company will have to ensure 80% coverage in the regions and on the main roads of the country, including Sevan, Tsakhkadzor, Jermuk, Dilijan, as well as 95% coverage on highways connecting Yerevan with these towns. The company will operate mobile communication in the mentioned areas.
The commercial launch of the mobile service is scheduled for not earlier than January 1 2015. The license will cost the company 6.2 billion drams (about $15.3 mln .The decision comes into force after the signing.
Ucom (Universal Communications) was founded in 2007 and is engaged in providing
telecommunications services. With assistance from Ericsson, the company has created a broadband network providing Internet services, IP-TV and fixed telephony.
Armenia has now three mobile operators- ArmenTel (trading as Beeline), owned fully by Russian VimpelCom ), VivaCell-MTS, owned 80 percent by Russian Mobile TeleSystems and Orange Armenia, a subsidiary of France Telecom. .-0-
