AREAL linac in Armenia to come online in 2013 May

YEREVAN, November 30, /ARKA/. AREAL linac will be commissioned in Armenia as part of CANDLE project in May of 2013, Samvel Harutyunyan, chairman of the State Science Committee of the Education and Science Ministry of Armenia, said today.

CANDLE (Center for the Advancement of Natural Discoveries Using Light Emission) is a project to create a source of synchrotron radiation of the third generation. CANDLE project will create an opportunity to conduct advanced basic and applied research in various fields of science.

Samvel Harutyunyan said 95 percent of the equipment has already arrived in Yerevan and is being now tested. He also said a team of Armenian specialists have been trained by various research centers in Europe to operate the AREAL linac.

AREAL linac will allow to generate ultra-short pulses of electron beam with a small immittance, which is perspective in the particle beam physics and accelerator technology.

According to Harutyunyan, the project has become possible thanks to cooperation of Armenian specialists with foreign counterparts from Russia, Italy, Germany, France, Switzerland and China.
CANDLE project head vasily Tsakanov said the accelerator will allow Armenian scientists to achieve significant progress in various fields of science, including medicine, biotechnology, electronics, and nanotechnology.

The project is implemented in cooperation with the German Center DESY, Swiss PSI, Stamford SLAG center and Novosibirsk Institute of Nuclear Physics in Russia. -0-
