Armenia improves its communication ranks in Global Competitiveness Report

YEREVAN, September 3. /ARKA/. Armenia’s communication indicators were far higher in the Global Competitiveness Report 2014-2015 than before, Manuk Yerghnyan, chairman of the Economy and Values Research Center, said Wednesday in Novosti International Press Center. 

“Armenia’s access to mobile telecommunication network was rated ten notches higher than before and it ranked 70th among 144 countries,” he said. “Access to fixed telecommunication brought the 58th rank to Armenia – it was higher than the country’s previous rank by seven notches.”  

Yerghnyan said Armenia has also improved its technology level indicator by one notch reaching the 71st rank. 

Instead, Armenia’s indicator of foreign investments in technology area plunged 29 notches to the 79th position and that of application of technologies by companies sank 15 point to the 113th position.  
“At the same time, the increased number of Internet users in Armenia has driven the country’s rank 13 notches up to the 71st position among 144 countries,” Yerghnyan said. 

He also stressed that the major emphasis in the Global Competitiveness Report is put on preservation of talents and innovations as the two key factors that will be able to ensure economic growth in the future if the private and public sectors consolidate their efforts. 

Armenia lost 21 points in its indicator of innovation opportunities falling to the 98th position and worsened its indicator of progressive technology purchase by the government by ten points slipping to the 121st position. 

Yerghnyan said that Armenian companies spending on studies and development prospects are growing, and the country climbed seven notches here obtaining the 102nd rank. 

Armenia was included in the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report for the first time in 2005. Armenia was placed 79th among 117 countries in the then report. In the 2012 report it ranked 82nd among 144 countries and in 2013 it was 79th among 148 countries. 

The Global Competitiveness Report is based on statistical reports and answers of surveyed entrepreneurs. Heads of 80-100 Armenian small, medium and large business organizations were surveyed this year.    The World Economic Forum is an international institution committed to improving the state of the world through public-private cooperation.
