Armenia’s IT industry can grow by about 30-35% a year, UITE head says
YEREVAN, July 22. / ARKA /. Armenia’s IT industry can grow by about 30-35% a year in the short term perspective, according to Karen Vardanyan, the director of the Union of Information Technology Enterprises (UITE).
Speaking at a news conference today he said this growth rate is possible given a greater promotion of e-commerce and support for technology entrepreneurship.
Vardanyan argued that if engineering education is stimulated at schools, in five years the IT growth rate can reach 60-100 percent.
He said this would place Armenia in the list of twenty leading countries in innovative technologies by 2023.
"This is our vision of the future and what we work for now," he said.
Armenia’s information technology industry has been growing 20 percent on average over the last years. Some 350 IT firms are said to employ over 10,000 mostly well-paid engineers and other specialists.
Of them 159 are foreign-owned or act as representative offices of large international companies. The
IT industry accounted last year for 2 percent of the national GDP, down from 5 percent in 2010, according to official data. -0-
