Public institutions in Armenia to shift to Armenian-language domain
YEREVAN, February 9. /ARKA/. All public institutions in Armenia have officially applied for placing their official websites at the Armenian language domain .հայ (.hay), head of Internet Society public organization Grigor Saghyan told a news conference today.
He said nearly 100 organizations have already applied for registration of their trademarks and trade names with the new domain zone.
He recalled that from September 2015 to 31 January 2016 only public institutions, trademarks, trade names, as well as intellectual property were allowed to register with the new domain.
According to him, they will have to confirm their application in February, and if there are several contenders for the same domain name, the winner will be chosen on a competitive basis. In particular, the applicants will have to prove their need to shift to the new domain.
Free registration for the Armenian language հայ (.hay) domain will kick off in March at sunrise.itc.am.
Saghyan said the cost of site placement in the new domain zone will be similar to the price of .am domain. The new address will operate in parallel with the already functioning .am domain.
The International Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers approved the new Armenian-language. հայ (pronounced "hye") domain in 2015 summer.
Experts believe that the new domain name will first and foremost stimulates more active use of the Armenian language in the Internet.
The official domain of Armenia is am. It appeared in August 1994. By the end of 2015 there were more than 22 thousand sites registered at .am domain zone. -0-
