Transition to digital television in Armenia may lead to closure of provincial TV companies - Melikyan
YEREVAN, November 13. /ARKA/. Transition to digital television in Armenia may lead to closure of some provincial TV companies, Ashot Melikyan, the head of the Committee to Protect Freedom of Expression, said Thursday at a discussion of the transition challenges.
In his words, the public is ill-informed about the process of transition from analogous to digital broadcasting, and people don’t know that on January 1, 2016, analogous broadcasting will halt.
Gagik Tadevosyan, the deputy transport and communications minister, said in response that analogous broadcasting will not halt in provinces until their residents acquire necessary devises.
It is decided to provide more than decoders of the total cost of AMD 365.4 million to 48,000 socially unsecured categories of people.
“There are fears that the digitalization will incapacitate local TV channels and they will be not able to operate, but these fears are groundless, since we will leave room for analogous broadcasting,” Tadevosyan said.
On May 21, 2015, the Armenian government ordered transition to digital broadcasting. In accordance with the decision, the transition will be completed on January 1, 2016. ----0---
