Prisoners in Armenia to be able to chat with loved ones through Skype
YEREVAN, October 26. /ARKA/. Prisoners in Armenia will be allowed to chat with their relatives and friends by using Skype software, deputy justice minister Suren Krmoyan said today in response to a question from a lawmaker Naira Zohrabyan from the Prosperous Armenia party.
According to Ms. Zohrabyan, about 30-35% of prisoners in Armenia have no relatives in the country, and can not exercise their right to meet with friends and relatives. Zohrabyan said these prisoners ask for the opportunity to communicate with loved ones through Skype.
"We have this problem, which is associated with the financial resources. We are negotiating with the Red Cross, and already have a preliminary agreement that a couple of correctional institutions will be provided with necessary equipment to arrange communication through Skype," - Krmoyan said.
According to him, given the situation the justice ministry is developing an electronic system that will include all ways of online communication, including video chats.
The deputy minister also said that next year the ministry plans to revise the legislation and provide technical equipment to at least several places of detention. -0-
