Postal stamp dedicated to inventor of Armenian alphabet cancelled
YEREVAN, June 19. /ARKA/. Armenia’s new transport and communications minister Gagik Beglarian, culture minister Hasmik Poghosian, acting CEO of Haypost Armenian postal service Hayk Avakian and others attended today a special ceremony to cancel a postal stamp dedicated to the founder of Armenian alphabet Mesrob Mashtots. The ceremony was part of events marking the 500th anniversary of the Armenian book printing.
The stamp depicts a famous tapestry by Grigor Khanjian, dedicated to the creation of the Armenian alphabet, which is currently kept in Holy See of Echmiadzin. Haypost said a total of 30,000 stamps were released.
The cost of the first seven stamps depicting the letters of the Armenian alphabet ranges from 10 to 280 drams. Later, Haypost plans to issue stamps with the images of the remaining letters of the Armenian alphabet.
Yerevan was declared by UNESCO World Book Capital 2012 on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of Armenian book printing. -0-
